Detroit, Michigan: The following three maps were published in 1860 as part of the Congressional Document "Public Lands" which reviewed public land issues that were dealt with between December 1828 and April 1834. Here is some of the history of these maps: The old town of Detroit was destroyed by fire in 1805. In 1806, Congress passed a law appropriating 10,000 acres of land in and adjacent to the old town and authorized the Judges and Governor of the Michigan Territory to lay out a new town and deal with the land title issues. It took until 1831 for the Governor to officially report back to Congress (this was apparently motivated by former land owners who filed claims for property lost when the town was replatted). Citizens of Detroit also complained to Congress that they, and not the Territorial Governor, should have the right to plat their own city.

A beautifully drawn map with elevated views of major landmarks including the Capitol, Penitentiary, Catholic Church, Arsenal, , and Old Market. Several plans had been drawn for the replatting of Detroit with the Mullet plan being the major contender over the Farmer plan. Condition: Folds as issued, agetoning, some spotting. Margins are not shown in scan.

  26. Michigan "Plan of Detroit." Bowen & Co, Lith. $250. Size approx. 11" x 12 1/2". Published in 1860 as part of the Congressional Document "Public Lands". (See notes above.) Shelby to the city. After the military property was granted to the city, new lots were platted and sold. Several plans had been drawn for the replatting of Detroit and this was one of the maps exhibited to Congress. Condition: Folds as issued, agetoning, some spotting. Margins are not shown in scan.
