"A Map of North America from the Latest Authorities, 1802" Engraved for Payne's Geography, 1802, $325. 8" x 10" . Interesting details include: the location of numerous Indian Tribes; Texas is annotated Florida is divided into East and West and extends as far west as the Mississippi River, the western part of North America is divided into New Albion, Louisiana, and New Mexico; interesting detail around Hudson Bay and north of Lake Superior which locates "Glocester House", Henley Ho.", and "E Main House". Primitive representation of Baffin Island and no representation of Lancaster or Melville Sounds (or any Northwest Passage). To see a detail of this map CLICK HERE. Interesting details include: Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia all extend to the Mississippi. The western part of Virginia is annotated "Kentuckey" and the western part of North Carolina is designated "Tennassee"; The area to the west of Pennsylvania is designated "N.W. Condition: Folds as issued, some offsetting, agetoning, a few spots including a small stain at the upper margin, otherwise good.
1818, Map of Part of the United States of America with the Territory of the Illinois on the Ohio, Particularly Designed to Illustrate Birkbeck's Journey $475. Published by J. Ridgway. Engraving with outline color, approximately 14" x 16". Morris Birkbeck came to the US with much of his family in 1817 with the intention of founding a settlement in the western wilderness. He arrived in Norfolk, Virginia and traveled to Richmond; Washington DC; Fredericktown, Maryland; Hagerstown; Pittsburg; Wheeling, Zanesville; Chillicothe; Cincinnati; Madison,Indiana; Vincennes and on to the Illinois Territory. This map shows the existing roads and rivers and the towns and includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana & Illinois Territory, the associated Great Lakes, and parts of Michigan Territory, Canada, New York, Delaware, North Carolina, and Tennessee. An interesting anomaly of this map is the expanded Indiana and the shifting of Illinois to the west of Lake Michigan. The track of Birkbecks' journey is traced with light dotted line. This is a very collectible record of early 19th Century United states geography and travel and has various interesting features. Map is agetoned, folded as issued, and there are a few old marginal separations at the folds. Map has been backed with a stiff paper.
"North America" by S. Hall, $155 , Published by A & C Black, 1854, handcolored engraving. 12" x 17" . Detailed map showing the area from the Arctic circle to the edge of South America. Alaska is designated as "Russian Territory", Canada is "British Territory" with subdivisions indicated with some detail of the explorations for the Northwest passage between Baffin Bay and the Arctic Ocean. The area from Queen Charlottes Island to Upper California is designated as "Oregon" and the Columbia River is designated "Oregon, or Columbia River". US states and territories are outlined with light dotted lines -- Virginia is still united, the Texas tophat extends to the Arkansas River, New Mexico extends from Texas to California. Condition: Agetoned along edges of paper (not near image), a few spots, tear in lower margin, otherwise very good. Scan does not show full margins.
"North America" by Johnson & Ward, $175, 1861, handcolored engraving. 18" x 23" . A great map with much of interest for North American collectors. US map still shows Virginia as undivided, New Mexico extends from Texas to California, Nebraska Territory continues all the way to Utah, the capitol of Utah is Fillmore City, the Dakota Territory includes all of the modern day Dakotas, plus most of Montana and Wyoming, Washington Territory wraps around Oregon and includes modern day Idaho, and Alaska is still labeled as Russian Territory. The locations of Indian tribes, the mail route across New Mexico and Texas, and various railroad lines are all annotated. The map of British America is also quite interesting with many of the early territories shown, including Swan River, English River, Great Slave Lake, Rupert River, and Moose. The entire west coast is labelled "New Columbia". This map also shows Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoning and a few dings at edges, slight browning along centerfold, otherwise very good. Scan does not show full margins.
"United States" Drawn & engraved by John Dower, $110. circa 1840's, 9" x 11", hand colored in outline. The United States at this time only consisted of the states east of the Mississippi. Map shows an undivided Virginia, part of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are indicated "Northwest Territory". Iowa is not marked. An interesting feature is that the Mississippi River is shown as continuing northward as far as Lake Winnipeg in Canada. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoning, a few minor spots, otherwise very good.
"United States of America", Drawn & Engraved by W.H. Lizars, ca. 1845, $275. Hand colored engraving with elaborate scrollwork border. Paper size is approx. 12" X 14 1/2" with the actual map dimensions being approx. 7 3/4" X 9 1/2".
A decorative map engraved for Lizars School Atlas showing the states and territories from Missouri eastward. Interesting features include a united Virginia, Maine is designated, "District of Maine", Tennessee marked as "Tenassee", Illinois and Indiana somewhat mishapen (probably due to errors in the path of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers), and the area north of Illinois (including the northern part of Michigan) is designated simultaneously as "Northwest Territory", "Chippeways", and "Wisconsin", while all of the territory from Missouri north to Canada is designated as "Iowa". The country is shown as far west as Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota with great detail. Map also shows rivers and roads. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoned along edges of paper (not near image), a few spots, break at fold in left and right margins slightly extending into image. Scan does not show full margins.
"Map of the Railroads In Whole or Part West, North, or South of the Missouri River in Which The United States Have Granted Any Loan or Credit or Subsidy in Bonds or Lands. June 30, 1883. " Thomas Donaldson , $145. Size approx. 14" x 25" . A wonderful map of the US with color coded annotations of railroad lines that indicate which lines received land and/or bond subsidies and which received sudsidies through states or territories. It also indicates which lines were entitled to full rates, reduced rates, or required to provide no cost transportation to the government. All railroads shown primarily had lines running west of the Missouri River. Scan shown is only a partial view. Actual map shows the entire US. The vertical line is the delineator for the location of the Missurri River. Condition: Folds as issued, agetoning at edges, a few minor spots, otherwise very good.
"United States" A Guyot, 1874....$65 Hand Colored Engraving, Approx. 12" x 18" . An interesting and detailed color plate with topographical detail, rivers, and rail lines. Map still shows the Dakotas as undivided and Oklahoma as Indian Territory. Coloring is keyed to divide the country into regions above or below 800 feet altitude. Along the bottom of the map is an elevation profile from San Francisco to Washington DC. Centerfold as issued, agetoning and handling at edges, repaired edge tears around perimeter, some toning along centerfold, some old pencil notations, otherwise a good impression and nicely colored.
