A very nice mid nineteenth century map of South America Condition: Minor spotting and agetoning. Edges of margims are rough with right margin chipped up to the ornate border of the map. Note: Left border and margins are not shown in scan.
"Johnson's South America" by Johnson and Ward, $175 , 1862, handcolored engraving. 18" x 27" . A very decorative large scale map of South America also showing the West Indies and Central America. Much detail along coasts, with national borders and political subdivisions, some topography, rivers, and towns in the interior. This map is heavily annotated with the routes of famous explorers, including Cook, La Perouse, Wallis, Halley, and Vancouver. Other interesting features: Bolivia extends to the Pacific and divides Peru from Chili, map also shows the Falklands, Southern Georgia, and the South Shetlands;   there is a very nice elevation showing a view of Cape Horn. Condition: Centerfold as issued, very light offsetting, short(about 1/4") split in fold at left edge, otherwise very good.
Panama, Columbia, and Ecuador "Map of the Countries on the South Sea from Panama to Guayquil For the Rev. Dr. Robertson's History of America, by Thos. Kitchin, Senr, $125, 1821, Published by T. Cadell, London. 10" x15" (approx). Interesting map showing coastal details, rivers, topographical detail, towns and cities in Panama, Columbia, and Ecuador. Also has a nice title cartouche. The upper part of Panama is labelled "Veragua". The northern part of Columbia is marked "Km. of Tierra Firma" and the southeastern region is marked "New Km. of Granada". Ecuador is labelled "Quito". Condition: Folds as issued, light age toning and offsetting with a few minor spots, otherwise very good.

Engraving with outline color, 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" . A very detailed representation of the known geography and exploration of this area at this point in the 19th Century. Guayana is divided into English Guayana, Dutch Guayana ("Surinam"), and French Guayana. The border between Brazil and French Guayana is annotated "Boundary by Convention of 1817". Very nice representation of the mouth of the Amazon and lots of interesting detail in the interior of Brazil. Shows towns, cities, roads, borders, locations of native tribes, and topography. Engraving with outline color, 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" . A very detailed representation of the known geography and exploration of this area at this point in the 19th Century. Also includes part of Panama. "Granada" is modern day Columbia. Ecuador is shown with expanded borders--extending all the way to western Brazil. Three different canals are labelled including the proposed location of the Panama Canal, the proposed location of the Canal of Cupica in Columbia( which would connect Cupica Bay in Granada to the Naipi and Atrado Rivers --which connect to the Gulf of Darien on the Atlantic Coast), and the location of the Raspadura Canal in Columbia, annotated, "constructed in 1783 by a monk of Novita. It unites the S.Juan to the Atrado and in the wet season still carries boats from one ocean to the other." Shows towns, cities, roads, borders, locations of native tribes, and topography. Age toning, a few spots, short repaired tear in lower margin, margin cropped close to border on left side (as issued), otherwise very good. Note: Scan does not show margins or borders of map.

"Venezuela, New Granada, and Ecuador" by J.H. Colton, 1855, $125 , Handcolored engraving with ornate border. Approx. 15" x 18". Decorative and detailed map with very nice scale image of these countries. Shows political subdivisions, rivers, towns, and cities. Map also traces the Amazon from central Brazil (at the junction with the Rio Negro) back to the southern Ecuadorian border. Ecuador extends as far east as the junction of the Putumayo and Amazon Rivers. The Amazon is annotated, " The Amazon River is called by the Peruvians 'Maranon' as far as the Brazilian frontier at Tabatinga; thence it takes the name of 'Solimoens' to the junction of the Rio Negro; and thence to the ocean the 'Amazon'." Condition: Light overall agetoning, a few spots, otherwise very good. Scan does not show full borders or margins.
"Bresil et Pays des Amazones, 1re Feuille" M. Bonne.....$95, ca 1788. Approx 11 1/2" x 16 1/2". A nicely scaled map of the upper part of Brazil, covering the coast from Cayenne to just south of Salvador. It has an interesting representation of the Mouth of the Amazon and tracks the Amazon River westward. Great topographiocal detail and delineation of political subdivisions. Folds as issued, a few very light spots, otherwise excellent.
Argentina & Chile "La Plata and Chile" , 1840, J. & C. Walker, $95. appx. 13 1/2" x 16", Outline color. Marked "Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." A nice map of what is modern day Argentina and Chile. Has a great deal of detail and the interior is annotated with the locations of various Indian tribes. Shows southwestern Bolivia extending to the Pacific coast with the northern border of Chile being at Pt. San Pedro. Condition: Agetoning, otherwise good. "Bolivia and Peru with a Part of Brazil" South America Sheet VI, Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge... Engraved by J.& C. Walker $95, no date though believed to be Ca. 1840's. Engraving with outline color. Size: 16.25" x 13.5". Condition: Very good though there is some age toning along edges; repaired corner; and minor paper loss in left margin. NOTE: Borders and margins are not shown on the picture.

Shows Bolivia extending to the Pacific and Peru's coastline running from Tumbez to the River Loa. There is an inset at lower left of the city of Lima. Also includes parts of Brazil, Ecuador, the Argentine Republic, and Paraguay. Condition: Light overall agetoning, a few spots, otherwise very good. Scan does not show full borders or margins.

A nice map of the tip of South America from Cape Horn and the Strait of Magellan to the River Negro. Also shows the Falkland Islands and has insets of the Isle of Georgia and of the South Shetlands and Orkneys. Has a great deal of detail along the coast and the interior is annotated with the locations of various Indian tribes. "Patagonia" by J.H. Colton, 1855, $125 , Engraving with ornate border. Approx. 15" x 18" . Decorative map with much coastal detail. The interior is rather tentative and empty with annotations like, "River Supposed to flow into the R. Chupat." This sheet also has detailed insets of the Falkland Islands, South Orkney or Powell's Group, and South Georgia Island. Condition: Light overall agetoning, a few spots, otherwise very good.
