The following maps are from the "Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies 1861-1865" These are collectible maps that were released by the US Government in sections over a period of approximately 1891-1895. They represent the culmination of the project by the War Dapartment to compile all maps, plans, and battlefield history available that originated during the Civil War. Though heavily dominated by Union maps (who after all had more maps to work with) there are also maps that originated from the Confederate Army - most notably those of Jedidiah Hotchkiss, the chief topograghical engineer in the CSA. There are also detailed plans of forts and defenses. Another aspect of this project was a compilation of beautifully detailed Civil War era topographic maps of all parts of the US - many of which were done on a scale of 10 miles to 1 inch.

All of these maps are on 18 1/2" x 29 1/2" centerfolded sheets which in many cases are laid out with multiple (sometimes unrelated) maps on them. The maps are usually colored with light green and highlighted with black, red, and blue lines. All maps are inscribed "Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, 1861 - 1865" and a plate number at the top. At the bottom they are inscribed, "Julius Bien & Co. , Lith. N.Y."
