  1. Asia - Large Map "Tartary", by N. R. Hewitt for Thomson's Atlas, 1814, $325. Paper size is approx. 21" x 25" . Hand colored engraving. This is a wonderful map of Asia, extending from the Caspian Sea to the Kamchatka Peninsula and including much of Persia, Hindoostan, and the Birman Empire. The Korean peninsula is shown and annotated as "Corea". All of Japan is shown with the northern islands annotated as "Chica or Jesso Island" and "Isle Tchoka Segalien". Condition: Centerfold as issued, margins appear to have been trimmed, agetoning, offsetting, and light overall soiling.


  2. "Asia in Six Sheets, Shewing the Latest Discoveries" by J.W. Lowry, published by B. Fellowes, 1839/40. $325, engraving, six plates, with each plate having a paper size of approximately 10 3/4" x 16 3/4", with plate size of 9" x 16". A wonderful set of very detailed early 19th Century maps of Asia. The plates are designed to line up exactly and could be either joined or matted to make an impressive single map. This map covers a huge area including Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, parts of the Russian Empire, India, China, Tibet, Tartary, Mongolia, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Cochin China, Birman Empire, Malaysia and much more.   3. "Asia" by S. Hall, $95 , Published by A & C Black, 1854, handcolored engraving. 12 1/2" x 17". A detailed map of Asia showing the continent fron Turkey to the Pacific Ocean, including thg Russian and Chinese Empires, Kamchatka, the Aleutians, Japan, and the Phillipines. Agetoned with some brown spotting, otherwise good condition. Scan does not show full margins.

  4. "Asia ", Drawn & Engraved by W.H. Lizars, ca. 1845, $150. Hand colored engraving with elaborate scrollwork border. Paper size is approx. 12" X 14 1/2" with the actual map dimensions being approx. 7 3/4" X 9 1/2". A decorative map engraved for Lizars School Atlas showing the Asian continent from Siberia to Australia. To see a detail,CLICK HERE. Condition: Some agetoning and handling, otherwise very good.

  5. "Johnsons Asia" by Johnson & Ward, $125. 1862, 14" x 18", hand colored engraving with decorative border. Shows political subdivisions and numerous cities, rivers, and prominent features. Includes the area from the Turkish Empire all the way to Japan. Condition: A few minor spots, otherwise very good. Scan shown crops borders and margins.

  6. "Russia in Asia" Drawn & engraved by John Dower, $85. Circa 1840's . 9" x 11", hand colored in outline. Divides Asian Russia into the districts of Omsk, Tomsk, Tobolsk, Yeniseisk, Irkutsk, Iakutsk, Tchuktchi, and Kamtchatska. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoning, a few minor spots, otherwise very good.

  7. "Russia in Asia", Drawn & Engraved by W.H. Lizars, ca. 1845, $150. Hand colored engraving with elaborate scrollwork border. Paper size is approx. 12" X 14 1/2" with the actual map dimensions being approx. 7 3/4" X 9 1/2". A decorative map engraved for Lizars School Atlas showing the area from the Urals to Kamchatka. Major map divisions are Tobolsk, Irkutsk, Kolivan, and Ochotsk. For a detail CLICK HERE., Condition: Some agetoning and handling, otherwise very good.

  8. "Eastern Siberia" 1838, Baldwin & Craddock.....$125 Engraving with outline coloring, appx. 13 1/2" x 16". Marked "under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." Very interesting. Shows the major eastern expanse of Russian Territory across Asia and into the western part of Alaska (labelled "Russian America"). Divides northern Asia in to Ieniseisk, Iakoutsk, Okhotsk, Tchouktchis, and Kamchatka - and shows the Kamchatka Peninsula all the way to the "Kourile Islands". Also shows the western Aleutians including Attou, Kiska, and Amchitka. Condition: Agetoned at edges, some browning in upper left corner, old binding holes in upper margin close to title and key, left margin cropped close to mileage scales (as issued), otherwise very good. Scan crops lower edge of map and margins & borders are not shown.

  9. "N.China, Manchuria, Mongolia, & Siberia" 1838, J. & C. Walker.....$125 Engraving with outline coloring, appx. 13 1/2" x 16". Marked "under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." This map shows great topographical detail, all major cities and towns, rivers, lakes, and deserts in the area from the Sea of Okhotsk to Korea in the east and as far west as Tibet and the Gobi Desert. Siberia is divided into Tomsk, Ieniseisk, Irkoutsk, Iakoutsk, and Okhotsk. Chinese Tartary is divided into Mongolia,"Mandchouria" - extending all the way to the Korean Peninsula (marked Corea -"dependent on China") and "Saghalian Oula" - with the entire Sakhalin peninsula extending across the right border. Northern China is divided from Tartary by the Great Wall of China and its path is shown (annotated, "1500 miles long, 30 feet wide, and 15 to 30 feet high"). In the Southeastern corner of the map are part of the Japanese Islands. Condition: Overall agetoning, some smudges in margins, upper margin has old binding holes, bottom margin is chipped at lower right corner (does not affect image). Note: Scan crops borders and margins.


  10. "China and the Birman Empire with parts of Cochin-China and Siam" by J. & C. Walker, 1838. $95Engraving with outline color, Size 13 1/2" x 16". Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. This map shows great topographical detail, all major cities and towns, rivers, and lakes in the area from the Great Wall of China (annotated "1500 miles long, 15 to 30 feet high, and 30 feet wide on the top") and the "Kingdom of Corea"in the North; the northern Philipines and Formosa at the southeast; to Cochin China(Vietnam), Laos, Siam (Thailand), and Birman (Burma) in the southwest. Condition: Some agetoning, margins chipped at edges (does not affect image), small ink stain on right border, otherwise very good. Note: Scan crops borders and margins.

  11. Vietnam   "A Chart of Part of the Coast of Cochin-China including Turon Harbour and the Island Callao From an Actual Survey in June 1793; published in 1796 by George Nicol; engraved by B. Baker.   $475. Size, approx. 16 1/2" x 22". Map shows a section of the central coast of Viet Nam at Cape Tourane and as far south as Fai Fo and Cu Lao. The track of the "Passage of the Jackall in her Passage from Turon Bay" is shown, along with soundings along the track. There are also various annotations and references to villages, rivers, and mountains along the coast. At bottom of chart is a lovely engraved elevation, titled, " View of the Entrance into Turon Bay, the South Peak of the Peninsula Tien-Tcha bearing W. by N Distant 10 miles, the Low Isthmus beteween the Peninsula and the Marble Rocks not Visible from the Deck." Condition: Scattered foxing, heaviest in margins; Trimmed inside of neatline at right (as issued) but latitude markings are showing.

  12. China "Sketch of the Pay-Ho or White River, and the Road from Pekin to Gehu" taken 1793 by H.W. Parish, Royal Artillery" $425. Engraving on heavy paper, published 1796 by George Nicol. 16" x 22 1/2" paper size. A rare and wonderful map extending from the Mouth of the Pay-Ho in the Gulf of Chihli, following the river to Peking and from there to Gehu. Map identifies landmarks along the way, major towns, topography, and missions. Some agetoning and foxing. Note: Picture shown does not include margins.

  13. China-Shantung Peninsula "A Sketch by Compass of the Coast of the Promontory of Shan-Tung with the Track of the Ships and the Soundings from the First making of Land to the Strait of Mi-A-Tu", by George Nicol 1796, $425. Engraved by B. Baker. Size 22.5" x 31". A rare engraving including a chart of the track of the "Hindostan" around the Shantung peninsula, showing coastal details. At the top is a large view entitled "view of the Passage between Cape Zeu-Oo-Tao and Islands to the Eastward of it with the Clarence standing through it; taken from Ki-San-Seu Bay." This engraving was one of the products of the report of the "Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China" in the late 1700's. Condition: There is some lighter foxing in image, heavier foxing in margins and along centerfold, but this is a very good impression of this engraving. Except for foxing, paper is in good shape. Scan does not show margins.

  14. China-Shantung Peninsula "Huge 1796 Engraving of a Chinese Harbor View and Two Elevations" $425. Engraved by Ellis. Inscribed, " Published April 12th, 1796 by Georg Nicol". Size 22.5" x 31". On wove paper that bears watermark that says "1794 J WHATMAN". A rare and wonderful engraving showing one harbor view and two elevations. At the top is an elevation entitled, "Cape Macartney bearing North-east, distant 4 leagues.; and Staunton's Island bearing North-east by east, distant 4 or 5 leagues." In the middle is an elevation entitled, "Cape Macartney, bearing West by North, distant 3 or 4 leagues and Cape Gower, bearing North-west by west, distant 4 leagues." (These are believed to be at the southern tip of the Shantung Peninsula). At the bottom is a view of the "City of Ten-Tchoo-Foo from the anchorage of the Hindostan in the Strait of Mi-a-Tau bearing South-west." (believed to be at the northern side of the Shantung peninsula) For an additional scan click HERE . This engraving was one of the products of the report of the "Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China" in the late 1700's.   15. China "Sketch of A Journey from Hang-Tchoo-Foo to Quang-Tchoo-Foo or Canton in China" published in 1796 by George Nicol; engraved by B. Baker.   $275. The area depicted includes Kwang-Tung, Fukein, Kiangsi, and part of Chekiang provinces. This map records the travels of the Embassy to China from Hong Kong to Hangchow and also includes the route to Nanking. Hong Kong is not specifically annotated, but Macao is. The map shows topographic details along the travel route, annotations on the progress of the trip, locations of missionary churches, and includes descriptive text all along the route. For instance: "These mountains are crowded with villages and extremely populous. The chief culture is rice, wheat, cotton and the Camellia Sesanqua."   For an additional view of this map click here.   Size: 22.5" X 31". Condition: Heavy foxing in margins and on right side of map; lighter foxing on rest of map.

  16. "China", Drawn & Engraved by W.H. Lizars, ca. 1845, $150. Hand colored engraving with elaborate scrollwork border. Paper size is approx. 12" X 14 1/2" with the actual map dimensions being approx. 7 3/4" X 9 1/2". A decorative map engraved for Lizars School Atlas showing the area from the Gulf of Tonkin (Hainan) to "Corea" and includes Formosa and part of Japan. Condition: Some agetoning and handling, otherwise very good.

  17. "Johnsons China " by Johnson and Ward, $125, 1864, 14" x 18" (approx). Hand colored engraving with ornate border. Lovely mid 19th Century map of the China. Delineates provinces, towns and villages, capitals, and rivers. Also annotated are the "Ports Opened by the Recent Treaties with China". At lower left are insets of Amoy Island and of "Canton and adjacent islands". Condition agetoned at edges, short reinforced tear at right margin (does not affect image), otherwise very good.

  18. "China" Geo. F. Cram $65. 13 1/2" x 21 1/2" paper size, 11 1/2" x 14" image size, 1883.Full color map showing the expanse of China from the Gobi Desert in the Northwest to islands of Formosa and Hainan in the China Sea. Lots of detail locating cities, provinces, and rivers. Centerfolded as issued. Some agetoning in margins, otherwise very good.

  19. "Johnson's Japan, Nippon, Kiusiu, Sikok, Yesso, and the Japanese Kuriles" by Johnson and Ward, $150, 1864, 14" x 18" (approx). Hand colored engraving with ornate border. Lovely mid 19th Century map of the Japan. Delineates provinces, towns and villages, capitals, and rivers. Condition agetoned at edges, otherwise very good.

  20. "Empire of Japan" 1835, Baldwin & Craddock.....$225 Engraving with outline coloring, appx. 13 1/2" x 16". Marked "under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." Includes an inset of Nagasaki Harbor. An interesting map naming the major Islands "Kiousiou", "Sitkokf", "Niphon", and "Yeso". otations at bottom discuss "Yedo the Metropolis" and "Meaco, the residence of the Dairi, or Spiritual Emperor.." Condition: Agetoned at edges, a few small smudges in the Sea of Japan, otherwise very good. Margins & borders are not shown on scan.

  21. "Map of the Persia, Turkey in Asia, Afghanistan, and Beloochistan" by S. Augustus Mitchell, 1866, $75. 12.5 x 15.25" . Beautifully engraved and handcolored with an ornate border. Condition: very good.

  22. "Persia" Drawn & engraved by John Dower, $85. circa 1840's, 9" x 11", hand colored in outline. Shows political subdivisions and numerous cities, towns, rivers, and topography from the Caspian Sea to the Indian Ocean. Major divisions include Persia, Khuzistan, Kerma, Sejistan, Afghanistan, Sarawan, and Beloochistan. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoning, a few minor spots.

  23. "Peninsula of India" , 1808, Published by C.S Smith,London, $95. Measuring 12" x 15" This map is quite lovely and is a very detailed look at only the area from about 19 deg. N. Lat (Approximately Bombay) to the tip of the peninsula (Cape Comorin). Condition: A few spots near borders, otherwise very good

  24. "Hindostan or India From the Best Authorities" , 1815, Published by Guthrie, $75. 8 1/2" x 9 1/2". Very detailed map covering the area roughly from the mouth of the Indus River eastward all the way to Siam. Rivers, cities, borders of Indian states, and topography are all annotated. Interesting details include the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the division of Siam into Upper and Lower Siam, and the location of the head of the Ganges. Condition: Folds as issued, dampstaining, and browned at edges.

  25. "India, The Bengal Presidency" James Virtue $60. 10" x 13" paper size, Ca. 1840, hand colored engraving. Shows the northern borders with Tibet and Afghanistan and extends to the Bay of Bengal. Center folded as issued. Overall very good condition.

  26. "India" Drawn & engraved by John Dower, $75. circa 1840's, 9" x 11", hand colored in outline. Shows political subdivisions and numerous cities, towns, rivers, and topography. Shows western border with "Beloochistan" along the Soliman Mountains and a northern border with "Thibet" along the Himalayas. Condition: Centerfold as issued, agetoning, some smudges alomg left margin, a few minor spots.

  27. "Hindoostan" , 1846 , by J. Gellatly for W & R Chambers , $85. Engraving with outline color, 9" x 11 1/2". Delineates the British Territory; Subject and Protected States; and Independent States. Condition: Light agetoning, light dampstaing along right edge, one small stain at upper left (near Khyber Pass), and a few other small spots. Note: Scan does not show full margins.

  28. South Western India "India VI" , $85. by Baldwin & Cradock, 1833, size 13 1/2" x 16", Outline Color, " Published Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." A very detailed map of the southwestern corner of India showing British territory, Guicowar, Sirohi, Marwar, Harraoutee, Scindia, Bundlecund, Bhopal, Nizam, Rajah of Berar, and Protected States. Much detail with borders, rivers, topography, cities, and towns shown. Condition: Some agetoning and spotting, but overall very good. Note: Scan does not show margins or borders.

  29. Double Plate "India" , $175. by S. Hall, published by A.&C. Black, 1854, Measuring approx. 17" x 25" . Very nice map - Shows all of India, Ceylon, and part of Beloochistan, Cabool, and Tibet. India is color coded to show the Presidencies of Bengal, Madras, and Bombay; British Territory; Independent States; and States under British protection. Also has an inset of "the Island of Singapore" and a table with a "Chronological Table of the Acquisitions of the British in India". Centerfold as issued. Condition: Some agetoning, short splits along centerfold at upper and lower edge, a few spots, otherwise good. Note: Scan does not show margins or borders.

  30. Southern Indian Ocean   "Sketches of the Island of Santo Paulo, Commonly Called Amsterdam, in the Indian Ocean, in Latitude 38 ° 42' S, Longitude 76 ° 54' East. " published in 1796 by George Nicol; engraved by W. Skelton.   $275. Size, approx. 16 1/2" x 22". Map shows a rare early survey of an obscure (but geologically interesting) island in the South Indian Ocean roughly midway between Australia and Madagascar. Sketches show the perimeter of the island and its interior details, including a crater, "Hot Swampy Ground", and hot springs. Lower part of sheet has lovely engraved view of the island, titled, "View of the Island of Santa Paulo, or Amsterdam, the Conical Rock Near the Entrance of the Crater, bearing West, Distant One Mile." Condition: Scattered foxing, heaviest in margins; some remnants of old binding at upper left.
